Keeping children safe is an important everyday task. As a parent or a child’s caregiver, you know children’s safety is a number one priority, and special events can enhance their need for safety even more.
This Halloween, while your children’s minds might be on ghosts and goblins, keep these safety tips on yours.
According to the National Safety Council, consider these key guidelines on Halloween:1
If you want to create a safer environment for your young children, consider a few of these safety tips:
Keep costumes safe.
-
All components of costumes, including wigs and accessories, should be flame-resistant. If they are not, you suspect they are not, or you are making any aspect of a costume from scratch, treat it with a flame retardant fabric spray.2
-
Attach reflective tape to costumes if your children are out after dark.
Only use nontoxic makeup that is tested in a small area of the skin first; remove any costume makeup before bed. Consider testing out the product 24 hours or more in advance of makeup application to ensure no allergic reaction occurs.
Keep kids safe while they’re out.
-
An adult should always be with young children on their Halloween route, and older children should plan a route with their parents.
-
Tell your children what time they should be home.
-
Talk to your children about safety around strangers; they should never get in a stranger’s car or go inside a stranger’s home.
-
Make sure children only trick-or-treat in known, well-lit areas.
-
Tell kids not to eat any of their candy until you have inspected it.
-
Kids and adults should remain aware of their surroundings at all times – and not distracted by electronic devices!
Discuss each of these guidelines with your children so everyone is on the same page and aware of the safety plan.
